Mommy treats

So this pregnancy hasn’t been the tip toeing bliss through the tulips I pictured. Along with your normal back aches, swelling, dreams about delivering a clothed 5 year old, and the young ninja practicing his karate in your abdomen, I have been sick. And not that average nausea morning sickness, I had a battle with my ulcer. I have something called Ulcerlative Colitis, or UC for short. And during my pregnancy because of the pressure of the baby and stress, my ulcer flared up which kept me bound to my bed and couch. So while I read about my pregnant friends enjoying prenatal yoga and pregnancy massages, me and Bam Bam (my dog) ran through my DVD collection accompanied by bland snacks. It wasn’t until the beginning of my third trimester I was able to walk or stand for more than 15 minutes without being in complete pain and I re-emerged back into the world with a smile and poked out belly button.

Once my color came back to my face, my honey surprised me with a wonderful treat… SPA TREATMENTS!! YAY FOR ME!!! On a Sunday morning Steve took me to LE PETIT DAY SPA in Larchmont Village, Los Angeles for a couples bath and a pregnancy Jade Stone Massage. OH MAN!!! The massage was exactly what the doctor ordered!! I’m 8 months pregnant and my back hurts when I even think about the baby… this massage truly helped the aches in my legs and back. I’ve been feeling better since the massage.

I thoroughly recommend this spa… pregnant or not… it’s peaceful, small, clean, great treatments, great staff. Le Petit Day Spa in Larchmont Village… treat someone and/or yourself! I know Steve thanked himself for coming up with the idea once we left!!

My Brother Charlie by Holly Robinson Peete & Ryan Elizabeth Peete

Over the past few years we have taken a look inside the world of  Holly Robinson Peete and how she deals with the day to day ups and downs of having a son with Autism. She has shared her thoughts, fears, joys and knowledge with us as a mother helping to bring a spotlight on Autism and it’s misconceptions. Since she revealed the news about her son, RJ, she has been the only one speaking about it from her family. But now RJ’s twin sister, Ryan shares her thoughts on living with a sibling with Autism in a new book entitled, My Brother Charlie.

I believe it took a lot of courage for Holly and RJ to share RJ’s story… and I think it’s just as wonderful and brave of Ryan to speak about her feelings on Autism and to dis-spell misconceptions people may have about Autism. I am excited to see an voice for other kids who have siblings with Autism.

Even if you don’t have a child or relative with Autism, I think that this book is a great book to read with your children. It can help a child understand that we all have something different about all of us and yet, we are still the same.  A great way to learn how to love and respect everyone for their differences and similarities. It’s a great read and a wonderful message.

Thank you Ryan for sharing your story! Some of us don’t have that much courage, thank you for showing us how easy it is to love, understand and respect.

Callie is very proud of her brother Charlie. He’s good at so many things — swimming, playing the piano, running fast. And Charlie has a special way with animals, especially their dog, Harriett.

But sometimes Charlie gets very quiet.

His words get locked inside him, and he seems far away.

Then, when Callie and Charlie start to play, Charlie is back to laughing, holding hands, having fun.
Charlie is like any other boy – and he has autism.

In this story, told from a sister’s point of view, we meet a family whose oldest son teaches them important lessons about togetherness, hope, tolerance, and love.

Holly Robinson Peete, bestselling author, actress, and national autism spokesperson, has paired with her daughter, Ryan, to co-author this uplifting book based on their own personal experiences with Holly’s son and Ryan’s brother, RJ, who has autism.

The Conversation by Hill Harper

HE’S BAAACK!!! Hill Harper is dropping a new book next week entitled, The Conversation: How Black Men And Women Can Build Loving, Trusting Relationships. Hill’s last two books, Letters To A Young Brother & Letters To A Young Sister were very successful and warmly received as they helped motivate a ton of young people to dream, believe, hope and accomplish. The first series of Letters I think didn’t shock too many people because once being a young man of color coming from a divorced home, Hill had a relate-able story to tell and great advice to bestow. The announcement of the second series got a couple of side eyes and groans as Hill is a single man with no children… so the question was, what advice could he give to young women about being young and female in America today?? And to everyone’s pleasant surprise, Letters To A Young Sister was just what the doctor ordered. Hill was able to speak to women not as a dad or an uncle but through the voice of a young man… one of their peers. Giving girls an insight how they are viewed by the young man, also bringing a boost of positivity and motivation to a generation of young women losing their identity before creating it.

Now I’ll be the first to say that when Hill told me he was writing a new book last year, I got excited… then he told me what it was about and I looked at my childless single friend in his bachelor pad and chuckled asking him if he was serious. He then began to give me a detailed description and I got to read some notes and pages. Once I listened to it all and read a few paragraphs, the skepticism faded. I realized that Hill wasn’t pulling a Dr. Spock sitting on his soap box spewing rhetoric he didn’t really understand himself, but he was going to take conversations we had all had together and put them out there for people to read. He is taking all the complaints, frustrations, wisdom, experiences we have all had and vented about and putting them on paper. Seeing them in print, knowing you’re not along may prevent people like me and Hill from venting to each other, but going to our partners instead to talk it out.

I recommend this book. Partly because Hill is my friend and someone I have gone to in the past to talk and share relationship woes with, so I’m slightly bias… but also because I really think it’s a good book. I think it’s needed right now where people are forgetting how to be a partner and what the definition of respect. People have forgotten how to be vulnerable to their spouse or partner, how to truly love completely and how to admit that they are flawed and work from there. It’s time to put in work, but sometimes we forget what that work entails. We all need to have that conversation and this book will help you start it.

Once you read it…Tweet Hill your thoughts and follow his Conversation on Twitter

In his first book for adults, New York Times bestselling author Hill Harper invites you to join the Conversation: an honest dialogue about the breakdown of African-American relationships. For generations African Americans have turned to their families in times of need – but now, this proud and strong legacy is in peril. Black men and women have stopped communicating effectively and it threatens the very relationships and marriages necessary to sustain the Black family. Today, less than a third of Black children are being raised in two-parent households, a sharp decline from past generations. So, why is it so difficult for Black men and women to build long-term, loving and mutually beneficial relationships? What is happening in the community that makes it so hard for women and men to find their way to each other? And why are there so few people who manage to hold a marriage together, even after finding a person to love?

In his moving yet practical book, Hill Harper undertakes a journey both universal and deeply personal in search of answers to these questions. He has conversations with friends and strangers -married, single and divorced – and learns about their private struggles, emotional vulnerabilities, and real concerns, and begins to see common themes emerge. As his journey picks up momentum, Hill begins to recognize his own struggles in other people’s stories, and is encouraged to more deeply examine his own relationship issues.

Why does so much misinformation and mistrust exist between the sexes? Hill addresses the stereotypes that have developed in the Black community, in the hope that by addressing the challenges, Black men and women can find their way to common ground. The Conversation aims to open up the lines of communication, and offers inspiration to those who want to take control of this crisis and start building successful, sustainable relationships.

instant gratification on pause

My brain is on fire tonight… don’t ask me why or how. I was/am working on a creative proposal that the outcome I am sure will truly benefit the future leaders of our country. As I’m writing and reading and rewriting and reading and researching and correcting, I am inspired by the need for change I am reading in my research. I am inspired to speak and do and act.

I sit back and think about all that we have and just how fast we move. All information is instant. It’s there in your hand, at your fingertips, on your television. We live in the age of news tickers, and TMZ and facebook and email. Everything we do is done instantly and faster each time we produce it. It isn’t necessarily better… it’s just, faster!

What are we doing? What are we teaching our children. Everything is about living in the now, taking over an industry and getting paid. No one states they are going to simply do their best, work as a team and build an industry. Community contributions have become fads and passion is almost non existent. A passion and knowledge for where they come from or where they are going. Money is a driving force and how fast they can get that money is the fuel. We have all of these tools and using them for the destruction of mankind. The more social networking sites we create to bring a sense of community, the more we isolate ourselves. We strip ourselves of mystery and trade it in for breaking news texts.

We need to slow down. Sit and really search for things that stir true passion in us and focus on that. Build, Build, Build. Time for my gen to slow down, kill instant gratification. Take pride. listen and care. Enjoy. Build on passion, not greed. Stop being selfish. We are blessed to live in an age of freedoms, Obama and the internet… lets build on that… make it BETTER… not FASTER. Do it for the little one’s looking up at you. the little one you’re settling into a crib right now. the one you lost. the one you dream of…

Ball~Baby~Breastfeeding~Bliss

Could I have picked a better time to have a lil’ dude that the boys can wrestle with and Steve can show off? He’ll be born during football season when Brett Favre has decided to make his final Jay Z curtain call! I think this kid is trying to become the absolute favorite. He’s going to give Pop an excuse to buy more clothes, Steve will have someone to train and Me and My mom will have a football buddy! Could I have picked a worse time to bring a baby into the world? As we gingerly step out of a recession, fight over health care and racial tensions boil over in the land of the free, and a short dictator plays with nuclear rockets. The world is chaotic and its inhabitants are bitter, scared and frivolous. Why would I choose this time for him to come into existence? Feeling very deserving, undeserving, excited, nervous, ready, unprepared and blessed all at the same time.

Get here kid!! …Wait Wait Wait… not yet! This schizophrenic madness and complete amour is baffling and settling all at the same time. Steve and I will never have another birthday, holiday or weekend alone with no responsibilities ever again and yet… I’m not going to miss it. Careless, frivolous parties with rose colored champagne and broken heels from dancing the night away are not really missed. Beautiful times they were… wonderful times… but somehow they just don’t compare to kicking party taking place in my belly. Love Love Love is all I know now. Bottle service has a whole new meaning… not better, necessarily, but more fulfilling… for me, at least. Trading in the empty Moet bottle for an Advent 4 oz bottle makes me feel whole and brings more warmth than blazing inferno on a damp night.

This fall will bring cheers all around for me and my family… new and old. I can’t wait.

Amber Ready~ Register Your Kids

So my brothers from the group Brutha just came back from New York telling me about this new project they have become associated with entitled, Amber Ready. They performed at their weekend kick off event on the 16th of August in NY with other supporters: Ciara, Day 26, Robin Thicke, Trey Songz and others.

Amber Ready is a great program that is like an Amber Alert, but will work more efficiently and effectively to get the information out about the missing child so that he/she is returned swiftly to their parents or guardians.

Our family as a whole, is very kid friendly and kid sensitive because we are such a large group. With two of us being parents, and one of us with a child on the way… this program is something we all have become passionate about. With the internet, GPS systems and over all over exposure and disappearance of privacy, it is necessary for us to take extra precautions to protect the children we love and care for. Brutha is an official supporter of Amber Ready, and I am also. Please visit the website and get more information, enroll and pass the word along. Lets work together to keep our children safe!
